RefugePoint’s Deployment Program places skilled Resettlement and Child Protection Experts with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and partner organizations worldwide to support resettlement operations. These staff interview refugees and document the stories of persecution they faced in their home countries as well as their experiences living in the host country, and refer them to governments for resettlement consideration.
Through this work, the Deployment Program helps more refugees access resettlement, complementary pathways, and critical protection services.
We began to wonder if we could provide support on resettlement cases outside of Nairobi. In partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), RefugePoint sent two Resettlement Experts to Dadaab, a refugee camp about 300 miles northeast of Nairobi, to interview refugees and submit their cases for resettlement. This partnership gradually expanded outside of Kenya, when RefugePoint deployed resettlement and child protection Experts to Egypt and Ethiopia.
Today, RefugePoint’s United Nations Collaboration Project (UNCP) focuses on increasing resettlement capacity by deploying Experts to UNHCR offices around the world, where they support thousands of refugees to access resettlement each year. This direct support augments UNHCR’s capacity to reach refugees through vital casework. We are now one of three UNHCR Deployment Partners mandated to deploy our Experts to UNHCR offices worldwide.
Our Experts expand support for refugees and strengthen humanitarian operations in the following ways:
Our team of resettlement and child protection Experts who are deployed through the United Nations Collaboration Project (UNCP) support thousands of refugees to access resettlement each year. Experts interview refugees and document their persecution stories in their home countries, their journeys to their current country of asylum, and the challenges they encounter living as refugees in the country of asylum. If eligible for resettlement, our Experts prepare and submit their cases to be considered for permanent relocation to a safe country.
Experts have also helped refugees access pathways to safety other than resettlement—such as reuniting with their families, applying to study at universities in safe countries through education pathways, accessing humanitarian visas, or seeking work opportunities abroad through labor mobility pathways.
Some of our Experts focus on ensuring the protection of at-risk children by assessing their needs and making recommendations and referrals for assistance. Through this process, many of the children (and their families) that we assist are referred for resettlement in countries where they can live safely. Often, the children supported by RefugePoint’s Experts are separated from their families or are completely unaccompanied.
Our Experts evaluate existing structures and systems and identify areas in which they can support in making improvements. They conduct trainings for, and provide coaching and mentoring to UNHCR and partner staff. Our Experts also develop systems and tools —including referral forms, standard operating procedures, case tracking mechanisms, and more— to ensure that refugees in need of resettlement are promptly identified and able to access resettlement.
James, a RefugePoint Child Protection Expert, explains what child protection entails.
“Children are are future leaders; therefore, if we safeguard their rights, if we protect them, if we stand in and ensure that their well-being is protected, then we stand to have a better tomorrow.”
