Ugwa’s family fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo in search of safety—her father escaping insecurity in one direction and the rest of the family finding refuge in Burundi. After years separated across borders, they reunited in Kenya, where Ugwa enrolled in school and began rebuilding her life. But when the sponsorship covering her secondary school fees ended in 10th grade, she was forced to leave school. She spent her days helping her sister in a small salon, learning to braid hair and grateful to contribute, but longing for a future with more possibility.

In 2022, her sister introduced her to RefugePoint. For the first time in years, Ugwa had the chance to return to school and choose her own path. She enrolled in an auto-wiring engineering course—drawing inspiration from women she once saw celebrated on television for their work in a garage.

Today, she’s thriving. With hands-on training and steady progress, she’s moving closer to her dream of opening her own garage and creating job opportunities for others.
