“I’ve seen my dream want to end… but I’m not giving in. I’m not giving up.”

Waka was a teenager in South Sudan when war broke out in 2013. He missed his math exam and was separated from friends he would never see again. Somehow, he found a way to finish high school—but in 2016, violence erupted again. This time, he knew he had to leave. Traveling mostly on foot, Waka crossed into Ethiopia, where he was registered as a refugee.

Now he’s working to reclaim what the war nearly took.

After arriving at the refugee camp, Waka enrolled in university. He studied by flashlight, navigated overcrowded computer labs, and endured spotty internet and limited resources. In 2022, after years of perseverance, he earned his bachelor’s degree in law. Today, with RefugePoint’s support, Waka is preparing for the next chapter: pursuing a graduate degree in human rights law.

At RefugePoint, we recognize the power of education to change lives and to play a foundational role in the pursuit of self-reliance. What started as a commitment to primary school access has evolved into a comprehensive program that now includes secondary education, university guidance, and vocational skills training. Your support helps ensure that people like Waka can pursue their education and build a stable future.

“These are the things that I want everyone who's outside there, who's listening, who is going to see this, to know. We [refugees] are here. We are not giving up on our dreams.” — Waka
