Today, the Biden Administration announced its commitment to bolstering the U.S. refugee resettlement system by raising refugee admissions to 125,000 individuals during fiscal year 2022. This is a critical step towards rebuilding a dismantled system that provides life-saving support for those fleeing persecution, human rights abuses, and violent conflict. RefugePoint welcomes this announcement and encourages the Biden Administration to provide a robust response to both the unfolding Afghan situation as well as refugees fleeing danger and stuck in long-term limbo in other parts of the world.

This move marks a step in the right direction for the United States to reclaim a leadership role in providing safe haven for vulnerable refugees. There is much work to be done to ramp up operations overseas to refer at-risk refugees into the program. The previous administration reduced refugee resettlement numbers to historic lows. Rebuilding capacity to receive and integrate refugees will also require continued commitment and resources from the Biden Administration.
